The Feminine Side of Fixed

by John on October 16, 2008

Recently I’ve been talking to a few girls that I am friends with that share my love of fixed gear riding. One is from The Cities, and the second is from Milwaukee, they’ve been sharing their opinions of fixed gear riding from a woman’s perspective with me.

The second from Milwaukee, says she does it because she loves it, she is not out to prove men wrong, she’s just out to ride around and be a kid again. When it comes to building, revamping, and repairing bikes she thinks girls should help girls, straying away the male dominance riding has had. She also believes the “biking/ fixed” community as a whole is a friendly one and is looking to accept anyone. She doesn’t think gender really so much matters.

The other who is from the cities, thinks her reason for riding a fixie is the same as any male, and is not really sure why more females don’t ride them. Other than they don’t really know what it is all about. “It’s just not something they care about,” she said. She also shared this with me, “Its funny, whenever I start talking to guys about bikes they just automatically assume I don’t know what they are talking about, and then when I tell them I ride a fixie they seem shocked or surprised, and then usually they find it as a segway to ask me on a bike ride slash date. .haha.” Physically she does not think there is any difference between girls and guys riding fixed geared bikes. She also said, “I feel just as capable, and I definitely feel just as passionate about building/searching for/riding fixed gear bikes!”

So in my opinion girls riding fixed is great, I would suggest it to any girl that is interested in biking. These two girls are some of the best that I know . They seem to love it just as much as any other guys I’ve ever talked to, and I hope to see more girls riding fixed in the near future.

I have several girl friends who ride both fixed and geared… sometimes, they are even more intense than me!
